Initiative
Background
According to the Institute for Economic Research, the shortfall of qualified engineers in Germany
in 2005 was around 30,000. Three years later the figure rose to around 64,000 and it is continuing
to rise. In addition, every year some 37,000 engineers retire for reasons of age, and from 2015
this figure will be up to 43,000.
The challenge facing commercial enterprises is to find sufficient suitable personnel for jobs
in technical areas during a period of economic growth coinciding with demographic change and an
increasing lack of interest in technical professions.
Lenord, Bauer & Co. GmbH is a medium-sized company that has a vital need of technological
personnel and recognised years ago the problem posed by the lack of technically qualified young
people. Since 2005 Lenord + Bauer and the association Science on Stage Deutschland e.V. have been
supporting joint projects for young technologists.
In 2009 a number of other companies joined this initiative. The companies Clyde Bergemann
GmbH, Grunewald GmbH & Co. KG and PROBAT Werke von Gimborn Maschinenfabrik GmbH are equally
affected by the shortage of engineers and are joining with the initiators to help promote
technology for young people.
