Competitions
Concept
In 2005 there was a marked shortage of engineers and technical workers that prompted Lenord, Bauer
& Co. GmbH and Science on Stage Deutschland e.V. to launch the competition “Innovative
Technologies Move Europe”, which is still taking place. Since 2009 a number of other companies have
begun supporting the competition.
Every year, in late summer, a new task is chosen for the competition and teachers and
students are invited to participate.
Teams consisting of teachers and from four to six students demonstrate their abilities in the
field of science and technology, thereby learning about careers in the field of technology.
The competition aims to achieve the following:
- bring together engineers and students for practical insights into science and technology
- pan-European cooperation between schools
- international exchange of experience about concepts and methods for teaching science
- short-term: design creative solutions to technical problems
- long-term: encourage young people to become engineers and technicians
- promote key skills, such as creativity, teamwork, languages
The competition runs for a period of six months. The teams first formulate the plans for their
project, which they then present to the other groups, in English, at the launch event in December.
The groups then have until April or May of the following year to transform their project
plans into models which they then demonstrate at the closing event, again in English, to the other
competitors and an international jury. Finally, prizes are awarded, and every participant also
receives a certificate.
Pedagogical support for the competition is handled by Science on Stage, and while it is in
progress the teams have access to materials and expertise from genuine engineers – which is where
the partner companies come in.
